Celebrating Family Day

February 10 2021

Family Day is coming up on Monday, February 15th so let’s take this opportunity to spend some quality time with each other.

Five Benefits of Family Time

The Child Development Institute shares just how important family time can be to a child's development:

  • They feel important and loved,
  • Provides an opportunity to model their parents’ behaviour,
  • Parents can observe and learn about their child’s strengths and weaknesses,
  • Presents a chance for children to voice their thoughts and feelings, and
  • Helps develop a stronger bond between parent and child

Happy and healthy children need lots of quality time and attention from their parents and/or caregivers. Family Day is a great opportunity to give children our full attention and here are some ideas to get you started.

Get creative

Whether you’re into Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts or even Math, we’ve got you covered. Learn how to make puppets or balloon-propelled vehicles with our online resource Creativebug.

Read stories together

Reading out loud never gets old, so grab a good book and read together. You can contact the library at 780-623-7467 to arrange for curbside pick up and staff can assist with the selection of materials.

Prefer digital? Tumblebooks is a great resource for early literacy and learning.

No matter the book, making reading a shared activity encourages discussion, which also helps to develop important literacy skills.

Get cooking

Learn to cook perogies, canjeero or other dishes from countries around the world with AtoZ World Food. If you love to bake then checkout the e-book titles in our local resource Freading.

Also stay tuned for our 2021 collection expansion which will include cake pans.

Play some fun games

Board games can be both educational and fun and we have a wide selection that you can borrow from our main branch using curbside pick up. If you do not have time to drop by you can make your own scavenger hunt, play cards, charades and even hide and seek right in your own home. If you want to try solving an Escape Room then visit our virtual one Lydia in Libraryland.

Get outside

Once the weather warms up go for a walk, enjoy Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park or the Alexander Hamilton Park which hosts ice fishing and an off leash dog park. If you wish try snowshoeing, contact the Bold Center for daily, weekly and family rentals by calling 780-623-3829.

Host a family movie night

Check out some of your favourite movies from the Library, pop some popcorn and curl up under a big blanket together. You can also borrow binge boxes or stream movies from Hoopla

Whatever you choose the Lac La Biche County Libraries wish you a happy Family Day!
